  1. Serial Number: '100 Bore: 16 Ga. Condition: Excellent Metal Condition: excellent Wood Condition: excellent Bore Condition: Good Barrels: re - browned Barrel Type: Damascus Gauge Info: 16 Ga. Weight: 7.5 lbs. Manufacture Date: C.
  2. This is a 12 guage Shotgun. Old but I have no idea how old. It looks pretty safe to shoot but I'm not going to risk it if no one knows this gun. Everyone tells me it's a copy of J Manton or John Manton and that it has no value and isn't listed in books. I find that hard to believe. I would love to post some photos. It has a 30 inch barrel I have these numbers on the barrel from.
Joseph

Provenance: The original owner was Robert Bingley who had an appointment with the Royal Mint.Text here Literature: The Mantons: Gunmakers by W. Keith Neal and D.H.L. Notes: The barrels have no serial numbers underneath although the breech hooks are stamped 7924 (the 2 is inverted). Joseph Manton Percussion Double Rifle, 25 Bore.58 Bright Damascus 24' Black Powder SXS 1820s Antique. Serial Number: We suspect that the rifle was not originally serialized, but 'WR31011' has been marked on the bottom of each barrel. Markings: The top of the barrel rib is marked 'MANTON LONDON' and each lockplate is marked 'MANTON'. The bottom of each barrel has British proof marks, '25' twice and 'WR31011'. The locks are showing their age a bit. They are a pewter gray patina, the cocks showing an old restored blue finish quite some time ago. The pans are waterproof and the vents platinum lined, the bridled frizzens deeply lobed, as-are the frizzen springs, each frizzen engraved with Joseph Manton patent and serial number '4324'.

With 31inch sighted browned twist barrels signed on the rib, colour hardened border and scroll engraved breeches, inlet with platinum maker's stamps, the undersides stamped with serial number repeated on the breeches, London proof marks and barrel makers mark CL (Charles Lancaster) platinum lined touch holes, colour hardened and scroll engraved tang, colour hardened border and scroll engraved signed locks, each stamped internally with serial number figured walnut half stock with chequered fore-end and wrist, red leather cheek piece stuffed with horse hair and trimmed with braided silver ribbon, vacant rectangular white metal escutcheon set behind the tang, border and scroll engraved steel mounts with good traces of original blued finish, scroll trigger guard, brass mounted wood ramrod. This gun retains most of its original brown and case colour hardened finish with good traces of blue with very good bores.
